Heart Rate Monitors

A good selection of cycling heart rate monitors is available.

The Polar cycling monitors combine heart rate with speed, distance and altitude. They let you record your performance, cycling data and training conditions like altitude or temperature. The data can then be downloaded to your computer, so you can analyze your performance. Several models are available ranging in price from about $110-350.

The Timex Bodylink Speed and Distance System is made of three pieces: a watch, a heart rate strap and GPS receiver that is connected by a radio signal. The heart rate signal is digital and will not be affected by other heart monitors.

The Timex Data Recorder collects data from your digital monitor system. This data can later be downloaded to your computer. Total package price for the watch, GPS, heart strap and Datalink is about $300.

The Garmin Edge model is an easy to use monitor that can be mounted on your bike. The standard Edge model measures speed, distance, time, calories burned, altitude and more. It is easy to install and has a reliable GPS receiver. It is waterproof and has a sleek design. Included is the Garmin Training Center software that analyses your data. Price is about $270. The advanced model comes with a heart rate monitor. Price is about $380.
