Running watches can be an excellent help for measuring your performance or progress in your training. They are convenient, if you are a walker, jogger or runner. The type of watch you need depends on the kind of runner you are.

There are many types and models available, ranging in price from about $40-1000.

1. A beginning jogger or runner might check out models that have features that will benefit a beginner. Basic features include:

  • A time mode that shows the time of the day and a full calendar.
  • An indicator that counts laps and shows lap times.
  • The data should be displayed in an easy to read format.

Price range is about $40-90.

2. An intermediate or advanced runner should check out watches that will record and display additional features. These features will help analyze and improve performance. Features might include:

  • A time mode that includes basic functions such as time, date and alarm.
  • An indicator that has the ability to display data for speed and distance.
  • An altimeter/barometer that displays information on weather and temperature.
  • Indicators, such as a compass, a thermometer and a heart rate monitor could be helpful.

Some of the higher priced watches have features that have the ability to review daily or weekly histories for a period of 2-3 years. This might be important for professional runners or people who need to check data for health reasons. Price range is about $300-1000.
