The Atkins Diet Plan
can be effective

The Atkins diet plan has been one of the most popular diet programs in the last few years. It has many believers, but many see the diet as dangerous. The diet is based on eating large quantities of meat and eggs and small amounts of carbohydrates like bread, potatoes, cereal and fruits.

The diet consists of four phases:
1.The introductory phase
It lasts 14 days and should do the following:

  • Switch your body from a carbohydrate to a fat burning metabolism
  • Reduce your blood sugar level
  • Put a limit on carbohydrates, such as bread, potatoes, cereal and fruits
  • Keep total carbohydrate consumption to 20 grams per day
2. Ongoing Weight Loss
During this phase more carbohydrates are consumed by gradually adding more vegetables, nuts and berries. It is important to count the carbohydrate grams daily. If this not done, the diet will be in trouble.

3. Pre Maintenance
Slowly more berries and other fruits are added. The carbohydrates must be counted daily to remain within the required limits.

4. Maintenance
If this phase is reached the weight loss goal has been achieved. Now a plan is needed to maintain the new way of eating.

Most people have a very difficult time with the Atkins diet, because it is difficult to eliminate bread, potatoes, pasta and sweets on a long term basis.
